| Yellow light to keep night flying insects away. | |
| ALLED is launching a new patent product at market at Mid of May, which is a dual color LED Camping Light, which includes a programmed dimmer switch to adjust the light between yellow and cool white light. And the yellow lighting function is part of our patent content for this light. Some may become confused that what is the function of the yellow light. To explain it, please you may be mentioned of one situation. If you have carefully observated your outdoor security night, you may find that insects and bugs keep circling around and around. You will find the same situation for the road light. So image the situation that if you are on camping trip at night, what is your feeling when you are boring by a set of insects? At that situation, if you have our light at hand, you are sure to be free from that hassel. So you may ask why a light has a yellow light plus will have that effect? To explain that, first you need to understand why insects are attracted to lights? People may have the normal sense that insects and bugs will be attracted to lights. Actually it is not the fact, only night flying insects are attacted by lights. So why? |
| There is no single scientific explanation for this behavior, however. Some explanation may be reference. | |
| One saying it is that, Nigh flying insects are evolved to navigate by the light of the moon. By keeping the moon's reflected light at a constant angle, the insects can maintain a steady flight path and a straight course. Artificial lights interfere with an insect's ability to detect the moonlight. They appear brighter, and radiate their light in multiple directions. Once an insect flies close enough to a light bulb, it attempts to navigate by way of the artificial light, rather than the moon. |
| One explanation is that, Light is treated as the sign to seperated Up and Down for night flying insects. As most insets are living in an environment that are surrounding by plants. So for insects, this is normal sense that, it become darker when more closed to the ground. At the opposite, when higher to the sky, it become lights. Besides, for insects, their hunters are more likely to appear on the ground. So for safety consideration, they will fly higher into the sky. At this sense, the light will be the sign of the high position. So it will be one explanation for reason that insects will be attracted by lights. |
| Actually not all lights will attract insects. Some kind of light radiatioin attracts insects, while some not. Insects are sensitive to a broad spectrum of light ranging from ultraviolet(UV) to red. Color sensitivity in UV spectrum plays an important role in navigation in flying and terrestrial invertebrate animals. Behavioral and electrophysiological experiements found that the insect eye responds to ultraviolet irradiation. This response leads to several different reactions. When insects are exposed to light, they may go toward or keep away from the source of illumination. For example, many insects forage at twilight when blue dominate the irradiance spectrum the sky. |

| A LED is a semiconductor lighting source. Originally, LEDs were introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962 and early LEDs emitted low-intnesity red light. However, modern version are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelenghts, with very high bright light. Based on our knowledge of insect vision and colors across the visible spectrum, it can be assumed that if the LED light emission is towards the higher end of visible spectrum(>550nm), it may be out of the range of vision of most insects. However if the LED light is within the range you can assure that it is visible by insects. |
